Elderly woman, Alma, navigates her love life following the death of her wife.

Widowed Alma lives a quiet life by herself in a charming cottage, going about her daily routines in the solitude of old age. To ease her loneliness, she finds comfort in frequent visits to a nearby farm shop. When she unexpectedly begins to develop feelings for Joan, the shopkeeper, Alma is faced with a wave of conflicting emotions. Her growing affection challenges a vow she made to remain alone after the passing of her wife, forcing her to reconsider what moving forward might mean.

A Note from our Director

"From the moment we started developing the story I felt so passionate about this film and deeply connected with the main character, Alma. Seeing her world come to life bit by bit has been an incredibly rewarding journey. It means so much to me that we’ve been able to bring to screen this beautiful story about an elderly lesbian finally having a hopeful ending. Stories like Alma’s deserve to be seen and celebrated, and I’m proud to help share hers with the world.."

Alma's Journey

In September 2024, nine students in their final year of university came together to create something meaningful. Driven by a shared vision and a passion for storytelling, they spent until May 2025, developing a short film. The result is Alma, a 15-minute film that showcases both their collaboration and individual talents. Take a look at their journey from start to finish.

Pre-Production

At the very start of pre production we all knew we wanted to make a story about something different and a topic that should be represented more. We all came to the conclusion that this should be about elderly lesbians and sadly found that there wasn’t much on this topic in media to begin with. We wanted to make a positive story, one that gives hope to those who can relate but also a positive film - that can provide a good feeling not one that leaves you wanting change.

Our writer took all of these ideas and came up with Alma, a story about an elderly woman struggling with the loss of her wife. Our film deals with lots of themes; not only LGBTQ+ but also the relationship between Alma and her daughter. We furthermore, wanted to touch upon the guilt elderly people can feel moving on when they lose a loved one later in life. “Moving on doesn’t mean forgetting her, mum” a touching line from our script that we hope people connect with.

We knew we needed around £2-3k to fund this film so we quickly put up a crowdfunder page promoting this to everyone, we managed to raise nearly £4,000 both through private donations and the crowdfunder; meaning we could afford perfect locations, actresses and props.

For 7 months the team was working hard behind the scenes to get ready for the shoot days; after mountains of recces, hours of self tapes and endless test shoots we were ready!

Production

6 long days of shooting in beautiful locations began! With around 20 cast and crew, chickens in the house and security alarms going off mid filming, we all had our fair share of challenges, but every moment made the experience more memorable, and brought us closer as a team.

Post Production

The final stretch! From March to May, the post team worked tirelessly to bring Alma to life; editing, colour grading, sound designing, and fine-tuning every detail to match our original vision. It was a long, focused process filled with late nights, creative problem-solving, and a lot of teamwork. Alma finally came to life!

Film Festivals

As we enter into film festivals, Alma brings you a heartwarming story of a woman figuring out her own emotions later in life. A beautiful LGBTQ+ story that lies unique in a world of negative lesbian tropes - we want to add Alma into the list of these positive stories. We plan to enter into LGBTQ+ film festivals amongst other local and well known film festivals.

Release & Beyond

Stay up to date with the world of Alma to see what else we all get up too and the hopefully long succession of this film. Stay tuned for the release in over a year's time too! Thank you for all your continuous support. We hope you love Alma just as much as we do.
